Hackerone provides a platform revolving around software vulnerability collection and penetration testing. It provides three separate solutions for companies ranging from basic vulnerability disclosure to a fully-fledged private bug bounty program. We have seen over the last year a continuous increase on the frequency and size of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks use for various goals, ranging from extortion of the victims, censorship, diversion from other attacks, and state sponsored events. Currently, big DDoS attacks are in the terabit scale. They can be easily hired, starting with less than 10 Euros. In this talk, we will cover the incentives, business models, and what we can expect and do about this emerging threat.

In this talk, Bart Roos will take you behind the scenes of a call center that placed over 5 million call to Dutch phone numbers and employed around 60 people. He will show how these call centers operate and how they convince their victims to pay for their ‘services’. For example, you will see the social engineering techniques used by the scammers. Bart will also show us how a list of 5 million potential victims was obtained from the call center and how he and his team were able to track down the owner.

The world of Cyber Security today is full of hacking and, more importantly, it’s implications. In order to be a significant player in this field, TNO performs research in the fields of digital attacks, risk management and prevention. Fully understanding how a hacker works is part of this research.

Jan will give a demo of hacking into a system, gaining access by exploiting a vulnerability in Joomla. We will obtain a shell and try to become root on the system.
